O.C. Marsh Evening Lecture Series

Volcanoes and Human Societies

With Joseph Manning
William K. and Marilyn Milton Simpson Professor of Classics and History, Yale University

Thursday, February 20, from 6:00 to 9:00 pm

Explosive volcanic eruptions have played a part in climate change throughout Mediterranean history. This poorly understood volcanic activity not only led to short-term social changes, but triggered global climate shifts that shaped early civilizations. Manning's research brings together climate and historical data to show how these ancient societies were affected by factors beyond their control.
