Message from the Director - July 7, 2020

Thanks to the encouragement of our community, generosity of our donors, and the support of University leadership, the renovation of the Yale Peabody Museum is continuing as planned. Not surprisingly, the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted progress in recent months, but through the tremendous effort of Museum staff, Yale Facilities, project partners, and vendors, our timeline for completion will shift only modestly. Socially-distanced work within the Peabody has restarted and appropriate enabling projects have picked up where they left off in March.

Our programs are continuing, but the Peabody’s galleries are closed.

Our Summer Camps have evolved into a dynamic, online experience for children called Summer with the Peabody: Natural History Near You. Lectures, gallery talks, and Science Cafes have been successfully translated to safe, interactive learning opportunities through Zoom and our social media platforms. We are making plans to continue our large, public events like Fiesta Latina and our MLK Celebration, and await further guidance from the state of Connecticut, New Haven, and Yale to finalize them. Trust that throughout the renovation process Yale Peabody Museum will continue offering programs and events that allow you to explore our collections, engage with our experts, and discover more about the history of our world.

Though we can’t welcome you back into the Peabody, in the coming weeks we will be releasing a schedule of virtual, staff-guided tours of many of our galleries. We hope this is an opportunity to experience them before objects are removed and construction begins. We will also be delivering regular updates on our progress via social media, e-blasts, and our Peabody Evolved website.

We hope this message has found you and your family safe and healthy. These are still uncertain times and we know the situation is far from resolved. As we all move forward together, the entire Peabody staff joins me in gratitude for your continued support.
