Yale Peabody Museum Summer Internships

The Age of Mammals Book Production Internship

Advisor: Rosemary Volpe

Length: 8 weeks in the summer, with the potential to continue into the fall

Project Description:

The Yale Peabody Museum is preparing a forthcoming publication on the theme of environmental change tentatively titled “The Age of Mammals: Climate Change and Evolution in Rudolph Zallinger’s Mural at Yale.” This book will showcase specimens from the Peabody collections, many of which are not on display, and the Zallinger mural at the Museum to introduce general audiences to historical and current paleontological and climate research at Yale and elsewhere, and the role of climate change in the evolution of life worldwide.

The Publications Office is looking for a motivated and detail-oriented student interested in learning about book print production to assist in the preparation of materials for this and possibly other Museum publication projects. The internship will provide an introduction to all stages of book print production in a museum environment. Tasks and assigned readings will provide hands-on experience and background in the editorial, administrative, and prepress aspects of publishing. By the end of the internship, the intern will be familiar with the technical and editorial requirements needed to produce professional museum publications. The intern may choose to concentrate on an area of interest. Students in graphic design, art history, journalism, humanities or other disciplines are welcome to apply.

Under the supervision of the Publications Manager, the intern will assist with researching, gathering and organizing content. Assigned tasks will be based on the production stage of the project. The student intern will attend museum staff meetings, with opportunities to visit museum collections and departments, and will attend weekly meetings with the Publications Manager to review progress on assigned tasks, plan projects and explore interests. Please contact the Director of Student Programs at david.heiser@yale.edu if you would like to see a more detailed set of expectations, essential duties, learning components and required skills.
