With 1,160 species and 16 orders, Africa has the greatest diversity and abundance of mammals in the world. The reasons for this and the mechanisms behind the evolution of these species are given special attention in the series Mammals of Africa, six books edited and illustrated by Jonathan Kingdon, Research Associate at the University of Oxford. The first such extensive coverage ever attempted, these books describe, in detail, every currently recognized species of African land mammal and incorporate the latest information on the morphology, distribution, biology and evolution (including fossil and molecular data) of Africa's mammals.
