Much of John Ostrom’s legacy involves his groundbreaking work on Archaeopteryx, the iconic “missing link” between dinosaurs and birds. Today recent technological advances are providing novel insights into this classic fossil species. In this talk Ryan Carney will discuss his research projects on Archaeopteryx that began right here at Yale, including discovery of its original feather color, 3D imaging of its skeleton—a story involving FBI agents and scanners used for space shuttle wings—and computer animation and X-ray videos of living birds and alligators. Together, these new approaches help resolve a centuries-old controversy: Was Archaeopteryx just a glider, or was it capable of powered flight?
