Museum Talk

Benjamin Silliman and the French Connection to the Yale Peabody Museum's Mineral Collection

With Stefan Nicolescu, Collection Manager, Division of Mineralogy, Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History

Saturday, March 2, 2013 at 10:00 am

Part of the extensive mineral collection acquired in 1825 on behalf of Yale College by Benjamin Silliman (1779 – 1864) was put together in 18th century pre-Revolutionary France by Jean Baptiste François Gigot d’Orcy (1733 – 1793), Inspector of Mines and later Receiver General of Finances for la généralité de Châlons. Stefan’s talk will shed light on the role Gigot d’Orcy played in the development of several branches of Natural History and will provide details on the life of this so far little-known patron of natural sciences.
