Yale Universitys GK-12 Graduate Teaching Fellows in Biodiversity Program began in coordination with the Peabody Fellows Program in May 2003. Supported by a National Science Foundation grant (DGE-0231832) from the Division of Graduate Education, this unique partnership enhances the Peabody Fellows existing science literacy initiative in the New Haven Public School district by promoting collaboration between Yale graduate students and teachers.
The NSF grant strives to improve communication and teaching skills of graduate students by linking them to pre-college education in their local communities. After an orientation led by Museum curators and collections managers, each GK-12 Fellow begins working in middle school classrooms with a Peabody Fellow Mentor Teacher. As dynamic young scientists, the GK-12 Fellows foster a curiosity and enthusiasm for learning science among young students. By communicating the excitement of scientific discovery, they hope to inspire a lifelong interest and sense of wonder about our place in the natural world.
