One of the special features of the Peabody Fellows program is the strong relationship it enjoys with the New Haven Public Schools. In fact, the school administration plays a crucial role in choosing each years Fellows.
Each year new partner schools are selected by New Haven Schools Superintendent Dr. Reginald Mayo and Science Curriculum Supervisor Dr. Marc Blosveren. The schools include those that have had already started using the hands-on STC kits, building on Dr. Blosverens vision of district-wide science reform.
Once the faculty at each school has been shown a slide presentation by the program director and curriculum specialist, teachers who wish to participate inform their school principals, who select four Peabody Fellows, along with an alternate.
Forty-three elementary and middle school teachers from sixteen New Haven Public Schools have been chosen for Peabody Fellowships to date. Included among the classroom teachers are several Library Media Specialists, who provide an invaluable resource to all the teachers in the schools.
Although increasing students science literacy is a stated objective of the program, of equal importance is the enhanced ability of non-science teachers to feel comfortable doing science in the classroom. Some of the most successful Peabody Fellows are the ones who have never imagined enjoying teaching science!
An extensive follow-up interview with each Fellow provides some of the most compelling evidence for the success of the program, as they report what their experience has meant to them both personally and professionally.
