Peabody Fellows Program
Curriculum Units

Peabody Fellows are given five months to create a curriculum unit of eight to ten lessons, totaling 12 to 20 hours of student involvement. The process begins before teachers leave the summer Biodiversity Institute, when topics are chosen and a skeletal framework takes shape. Exploring the specimens of the BioAction Lab, Fellows begin to focus on an area of particular interest.

Units are expected to incorporate the BioAction Lab into at least half of the planned lessons, and to include at least one outdoor experience. Teachers submit drafts to be evaluated according to science content, use of hands-on and inquiry teaching, authentic assessment, and engaging extension activities to reinforce the material. Working with the curriculum specialist in a constructive atmosphere encourages the Fellows to push the envelope of their usual methods of teaching science.

Once the final draft is ready, the Lab arrives at the school, and the excitement generated among the students is ample reward for the months of intense work.
