What Is EVOLUTIONS?

  • It’s a “club” for students interested in science, serious about school and headed to college.
  • It’s a place where you’ll learn how to make yourself competitive for college, explore what you want to do with your life and make a bunch of great friends from other schools — students as serious as you are.
  • It’s an opportunity to get paid as an intern in a Yale professor’s lab and work at the Peabody Museum teaching exhibits to visitors.

Worried that it might not be fun? Check it out:

We mix it up with projects, fun and field trips. In fact, in 2007/08 we visited the Boston Museum of Science and 6 universities around Washington DC (overnighter!), including the University of Delaware, John Hopkins University, Catholic University, Georgetown University, the University of Maryland and Howard University.

Still skeptical? Listen to what students from last year had to say:

“At EVOLUTIONS it’s more like a big family…”

“I've noticed that almost all [EVOLUTIONS students] talk about colleges they're thinking about applying to, or they think a lot about SAT prep. I gather that these are the serious students that will be successful…”

“The kids at EVO are passionate about what they do, and why they're here.”

“We think different.”

“All of my top freshmen experiences have come from working in EVOLUTIONS. I wouldn’t trade a second of my time in EVO for anything in the world.”

The EVOLUTIONS Toolkit and Examples of Student Work

The National Science Foundation GEODES Project
Over the 2007/08 academic year, EVOLUTIONS received funding from the National Science Foundation to implement a program focused around the geosciences.  EVOLUTIONS students conducted geoscience career research, produced an exhibition focused on the geosciences and produced standards-aligned videos intended to teach geoscience topics to elementary students. These materials are available here, as are the 2007/08 GEODES program evaluation report, additional geoscience curriculum examples and video interviews with Yale researchers conducting geoscience-related research. Anyone interested in receiving a higher resolution copy of any videos can email peabody.afterschool@yale.edu.

The EVOLUTIONS Program Implementation Toolkit
This is the 2nd iteration (updated spring 2009) of a toolkit initially developed with NSF funding intended to detail the implementation of the EVOLUTIONS After School Program from its inception.  The toolkit includes a comprehensive narrative in addition to several administrative and curricular tools. Anyone wishing for a hard copy of the toolkit can email peabody.afterschool@yale.edu.

Working Underwater: Highlighting Ocean Scientists at Yale University
Over the 2008/09 academic year, with funding from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, students in the EVOLUTIONS After School Program created an exhibition focused on the research of Yale scientists conducting work in ocean environments.  The exhibition contained video interviews with Yale scientists, associated text panels and a hands-on activity where visitors were invited to build and test their own remotely operated underwater robots (ROVs). Anyone interested in receiving a higher resolution copy of any videos can email peabody.afterschool@yale.edu.

Our logo is a stylized version of the Hopi Native American “Man in the Maze” or “Life Choice” symbol.  It signifies that making the correct choices in life will lead to a place of “enlightenment.”
