Photography and Filming at the Yale Peabody Museum

With certain limitations, the Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History permits scholars, students and the general public to photograph the Museum and its collections.

Any use of Yale Peabody Museum images, text and data is governed by the Yale Peabody Museum Usage Rights Policy and the conditions printed on the Museum’s Permission Request and Agreement Form. Fees, including research fees, may be charged by the Museum depending on the extent of the services provided, the rights required, and the nature of use. Requests for Personal and Scholarly Photography or Filming

In general, photography with hand-held cameras only is permitted in the Yale Peabody Museum’s exhibition halls without written permission, for noncommercial personal, educational or academic purposes only (defined as without personal or corporate gain), and must not interfere with public use of the halls. Photography may be prohibited in certain exhibitions. Photography or filming of the Zallinger murals The Age of Reptiles and The Age of Mammals is prohibited. All other uses require advance written permission. Contact the Permissions Office for information. If in doubt please inquire at the Admissions desk in the Peabody lobby.

All requests for permission to photograph specimens and objects in the Yale Peabody Museum collections for noncommercial personal and scholarly purposes must be submitted in writing. Direct requests in advance to the Collections Manager of the specific division, who will provide a Divisional Agreement Form to detail the requirements of the request and assess the usage requested. Unusual requests will require the approval from the appropriate curator or curatorial designee or, in their absence, from the Director of the Yale Peabody Museum.

Requests by Members of the Press

Requests for photography and filming for news, publicity and promotional purposes require advance notification. Members of the media should contact:

Requests for Commercial Filming and Photography Shoots

Location photography or filming for commercial use, defined as for personal or corporate gain in publications, and in films, television, electronic media and other commercial products, including educational projects, must be formally requested in writing in advance at least 4 weeks in advance and is subject to approval, fees and the availability of staff. Public galleries and some other areas may be made available with prior written permission as locations for films, video or television productions, and for promotional photography, but not all areas may be available at all times.

All requests, including requests to film or photograph in the collections, require advance notification and approval. The Yale Peabody Museum reserves the right to refuse requests not appropriate to the Museum’s mission.

Photography of specimens and objects in the collections can be provided or arranged through the Museum. All requests must be made in advance in writing using our permissions form. Contact the Permissions Office for information on availability, usage rights and fees.

Under no circumstances will permission be granted to photograph or film the Zallinger murals The Age of Reptiles and The Age of Mammals. For information on licensing these works of art, contact the Permissions Office.
