The herpetology collection in the Division of Vertebrate Zoology
houses type specimens of 10 taxa (totaling 119 specimens). Six of these
taxa are from Haiti, the result of a joint expedition to that island in
the 1950s by the Yale Peabody Museum and the Florida Museum of Natural
History. Of the remaining taxa, 3 are from Papua New Guinea, and the
last from Bolivia.
Recent expeditions
by Peabody herpetologists have resulted in what are probably additional
new species. Thus, the collection of type specimens is poised to grow.
The Yale Peabody Museum’s collections are available to legitimate
researchers for scholarly use. Loans are issued to responsible
individuals at established institutions. Loans and access to the
collection can be arranged through the Collections Manager.
